The Isis-Urania Temple

Temple No. 3, Isis-Urania, was by far the largest and most prosperous of the Golden Dawn temples. Within its first 10 years it had admitted over 100 men and 80 women. Most of the key members of the Golden Dawn were members of the Isis-Urania Temple.

The term “temple” should not be taken to refer to a single place or venue. The Order made due with renting various public or semi-private rooms and buildings for their functions. Large gatherings, such as the biannual Equinox Rites, were usually held at Mark Masons Hall, for example. Members of the Order also met informally, in their own homes or flats. There are even instances of initiation ceremonies being held in such informal settings. By and large, however, such meetings were for private discussion and study, consecrations of minor devices, and readings in astrology or the Tarot.
